Awarded for work completed at the Van Andel Institute among 130 regional entrants from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky – Cochrane Niagara Summit
At the Cochrane Niagara Summit 2011, ControlNET was awarded First Place: Best Controls Project for work completed at the Van Andel Institute. This project was chosen out of 130 entrants from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
The Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) is a medical research, science and education facility conducting world-class biomedical research with a focus on cancer and Parkinson disease with an emphasis on translating scientific research results into clinical applications. The Van Andel Education Institute (VAEI) strengthens science education, preparing and motivating individuals in the pursuit of science and science-related professions.
ControlNET was selected from a field of Fortune 500 and independent contractors to provide an integrated “Intelligent Building” solution for the Van Andel Institute. ControlNET’s team studied, collaborated and engineered a complex integrated building control solution, helping VARI to achieve LEED Platinum, one of a very few laboratories to achieve such distinction. Tridium’s Niagara AX Framework enabled the integration of no less than eighteen disparate subsystems via the deployment of multiple protocols, databases, drivers and custom drivers. With the intelligent application of innovative “Smart Building” automation strategies, ControlNET helped VARI realize a 21% savings on energy performance over current ASHRAE standards.

In fact, ControlNET was a finalist in two out of four categories for BuilConn’s 2005 Buildy Awards because of the groundbreaking integration project performed for the Whirlpool World Headquarters Corporate Data Center in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
